“1798 - The Year of the French” CONTROVERSIAL COMEDY COMING HOME!
.
It's 1798 in Mayo, and Mathew Tone is depressed - It's difficult enough being the ignored younger brother of Wolfe Tone,
but now he's stuck with seven hundred homesick Frenchmen, six months late for the rebellion, in the wrong end of the country
and it's raining…
….....again.
Can things possibly get worse?
919 Films & Theatre present the hit comedy, fresh from its’ successful Galway run: "1798 - The Year Of The French" written and directed by Liam Heffron.
“Irish History has never been such fun! …George B. Miller (Selkie Theatre).
Yes it’s irreverent. Yes it pokes its finger into the eyes of historical figures and Yes it has drawn the wrath of some “serious scholars” but the play,
"1798 - The Year Of The French", is a wickedly funny take on Irish history by the author of the hit drama "The Tinker's Blade" (An Taibhdhearc 2006, 2007).
Actor and playwright Liam Heffron says of his new piece: "I have always been fascinated by this unique time in Mayo history but where others saw tragedy
and depression I saw the dark humour in these events which lurched from heroism to farce, and back again.” Drawing on such influences as “Blackadder” and
“Fr. Ted”, “1798 – The Year of the French” brings the characters of that turbulent period to life with plenty of audience participation!
“Too much of history is taught in stale classrooms with long faces, to understand our heroes we must be prepared to laugh with them too”, claims Liam.
“The historians who say that we are mocking General Humbert and the other leaders are missing the point of why we teach history at all!”
Liam Heffron is a successful actor, writer and director. A native of Moygownagh in North Mayo he has previously worked for Irish,
British and Canadian Television.
